Terms of Use

Unikal Keyring · Ethan Vaughn

These Terms of Use are the agreement between you and Ethan Vaughn ("we", "us"), publisher of the Unikal Keyring mobile app, covering your use of the app and this website.

Unikal Keyring is an organiser for people who travel constantly and carry more keys than they can keep straight: arrange the ring, identify each raw blank, mark whether something is a duplicate or a cylinder replacement, note the window between trains, and follow each key's "ready for pickup" state. It is a private notebook — nothing more.

Effective 20 August 2026. By installing or using the app you accept these terms; if you do not accept them, remove the app.

CUT01

Acceptance and eligibility

Using Unikal Keyring means you agree to these terms. You must be old enough to form a binding contract where you live, and at least 13 years old. If you use the app on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for it.

CUT02

Your licence

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use one copy of the app per device you own or control, for your own key-management purposes. Business use is permitted on the same footing, as long as it is your own records.

CUT03

What the app is not

Unikal Keyring records what you tell it. It does not, and cannot:

  • identify a key blank for you, verify a profile, or confirm that a blank fits a given lock;
  • place an order with a locksmith, key counter or hardware shop;
  • act as proof of ownership, authority or a right of access to any door, vehicle or property;
  • function as a security system, lock, credential store or access-control product.

Cutting, replacing and fitting are performed by third parties you deal with directly, on their own terms.

CUT04

Accuracy of what you record

Blank labels, copy versus cylinder-replacement flags, quantities, counter names, pickup windows and status marks are entered by you. You are responsible for their accuracy, and for checking a physical key against the lock it is meant to open before you rely on it. A key marked "ready for pickup" in the app tells you what you recorded, not what a shop has actually done.

Lawful and authorised use

You may only record keys you own or are authorised to hold, and only request duplicates or cylinder replacements you are entitled to request. Many keys are restricted by law or by contract — landlord and tenant terms, "do not duplicate" registered profiles, employer property, vehicle keys. Using the app to plan or track unauthorised copying, or to store information intended to help someone gain entry they have no right to, is prohibited and may end your licence immediately.

You also agree not to reverse engineer, decompile, resell, sublicense or rebrand the app, or to try to break or bypass any technical limit in it.

CUT06

Your data and backups

Your entries are stored on your device. We keep no copy and provide no recovery service. If the device is lost, wiped, damaged, or the app is uninstalled, that data is gone unless your own device backup holds it. Keeping a backup is your responsibility. See the Privacy Policy for how the data is handled.

Purchases, if any

Where the app offers a paid version or an in-app purchase, the transaction is handled entirely by Apple's App Store or Google Play. Billing, refunds and subscription cancellation follow that store's rules, not ours. We receive no card details.

Updates and availability

We may change, add or remove features, and may stop supporting older operating-system versions or discontinue the app entirely. Updates are distributed through the app store. We do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation.

No warranty

The app is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case the minimum protections required by your local consumer law still apply to you.

CUT11

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, nor for lost data, missed pickups, missed connections, wasted travel, locksmith or re-cutting costs, or loss arising from a key that does not work. Our total aggregate liability is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim, or USD 25 if the app was free. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

CUT12

Termination, changes and contact

You may end this agreement at any time by deleting the app. We may suspend or end your licence if you breach these terms. Clauses 6, 7, 10 and 11 survive termination.

We may revise these terms; the effective date above will change and material revisions will be noted in the release notes. Continued use after a revision means acceptance. If a clause is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force.

Terms used above

Blank
An uncut key of a given profile, before any bitting is machined into it.
Copy
A duplicate cut from an existing working key.
Cylinder replacement
Swapping the lock's cylinder so that a new set of keys operates it — the old keys stop working.
Pickup window
The time you record between connections in which a finished key can realistically be collected.
Ready for pickup
